When Privileges Benefits You, Rights Feels Like Burden
Privileges and rights are two different thing. Privileges is some convenience that you get for being what you are, such as your gender, your skin colour, your race. Rights, are something that you have naturally. The most common rights that one should have is Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1945, of which everyone has the right to live, and right to be treated as an equal as an human being. Everyone, who is human, is entitled to this rights.
Who will have privileges? Basically – the majority. Anyone who is majority in a country, regardless of their race, religion and views, are often those will have privileges. Thus, their opinion are the one that is referred to, in times of conflict. What about the minority? Oppressed. There is nothing that should be heard of people who comes from underprivileged family, no position, with different religion and skin colour. What worst is – they are woman.
Woman in society often seen as something that is burden to the family. The Arab once had culture of killing girl babies because they will bring shame to family. In conservative society nowadays too, woman is a disgrace for a family if they are married late, or not having hymen. In Malaysia, woman has moved to the front line to become leaders of company, political parties, non-governmental organisation. They took years to climb up the ladder to success. How they went up there – facing discrimination, less support, and all those harsh words thrown to them, defamation, blackmailing and all – they have risked the society norms to be someone who they are today?
Woman should be allowed to be leaders and they can make decision for a society. Don’t tell them that they are emotional and irrational because they have menstrual cycle – because that menstrual cycle gave birth to a human being – regardless how powerful they are. Therefore, think as this way – treat woman equally because they are human – not because they are objects and those who will follow the lead of men, because woman can lead too. Woman makes decisions too, and they are important to the society too.
